As an adult learner, you might be inclined to try and skip past the Spanish alphabet to get to the \u201creal learning\u201d to become fluent. <strong>However, in order to feel confident speaking and reading, you need to master the sounds each letter makes.<\/strong> Without spending adequate time practicing the sounds of Spanish in their smallest forms, you\u2019ll struggle more down the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phonics\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Phonics (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">Phonics<\/a>\u00a0is a way to teach that written and spoken language are connected. The standard Spanish alphabet pronunciation is what we will focus on here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re brand new to Spanish, there are tons of online resources to learn and practice the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spanishdict.com\/guide\/spanish-alphabet-pronunciation\" class=\"ek-link\">Spanish alphabet<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Letters with Multiple Pronunciations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few letters with a few different pronunciations. <strong>The good news is you can easily memorize when the letter makes each sound! <\/strong>The rules are very clear in Spanish, and there aren\u2019t too many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Letter C<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Before <em>a, o<\/em> ou <em>u<\/em> <\/strong>it sounds like the English k.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, the Spanish words <em>cama, comer<\/em> et <em>cuando.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Before <em>e<\/em> ou <em>i<\/em><\/strong> it sounds like the English s.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, the Spanish words <em>centavo <\/em>et <em>cine.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In Spain before <em>e<\/em> ou <em>i<\/em><\/strong> it sounds like the\u00a0<em>th<\/em>\u00a0in the English word\u00a0<em>chose<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see both types of pronunciation in the word <em>circo.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Letter G<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Before <em>a, o<\/em> ou <em>u<\/em> <\/strong>it sounds like the English hard g, like the word \u201cgrill.\u201d \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, the Spanish words <em>gato, gordo <\/em>et<em> gustar.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Before <em>e<\/em> ou <em>i<\/em><\/strong> it sounds like the English h. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, the Spanish words <em>gente <\/em>et <em>gimnasio.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see both types of pronunciation in the word <em>gigante.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Letter Y- Consonant and Vowel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>At the beginning of a word, followed by a vowel,<\/strong> it sounds like the English y like \u201cyellow.\u201d It functions as a consonant here, just like in English.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, the Spanish word <em>llave <\/em>ou <em>yo.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As the last syllable of a word when it\u2019s unstressed, it sounds like the English \u201cee\u201d and functions as a vowel.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, the Spanish word <em>hoy.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, the Spanish word \u201cy\u201d!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, if you\u2019re interested in how the sounds of Spanish may differ across the world, or even across your own city, there are plenty of unique styles and pronunciations to learn!<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colors, numbers and the alphabet are the building blocks of any language, which is why introductory Spanish courses dedicate so much time to mastering them.
