In Spanish, there are some words that can take on multiple meanings. Sometimes meaning can vary based on the country, but others depend on the context. Keep reading to learn more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Words with multiple meanings in different countries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on where in the world you are, these terms can have very different slang meanings. You might think you know what they mean, but when you read the descriptions, you\u2019ll see just how much variation there can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em><strong>Torta<\/strong><\/em>\u2013 This phrase can change depending on the <a href=\"http:\/\/conversaspanishinstitute.com\/ru\/%d0%b1%d0%bb%d0%be%d0%b3\/21-%d0%b8%d1%81%d0%bf%d0%b0%d0%bd%d0%be%d1%8f%d0%b7%d1%8b%d1%87%d0%bd%d0%b0%d1%8f-%d1%81%d1%82%d1%80%d0%b0%d0%bd%d0%b0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"21 Spanish Speaking Countries\">country or region<\/a> you hear it. In Spain, it can refer to a delicious cake served at a birthday party. In the same country, it could also mean a slap in the face! As you go to other areas of Spain, it could mean a flat bread. Moving to Mexico, it\u2019s a common word for a sandwich on a special bread called <em>telera<\/em>.<\/li><li><em><strong>Fresa<\/strong><\/em>\u2013 You may have seen this word as a flavor or ingredient. In many countries, it means <em>strawberry<\/em>. However, in Mexico, if you hear someone called a <em>fresa<\/em>, it\u2019s a negative term to mean that they are superficial, preppy, and wealthy.<\/li><li><strong><em>Mona<\/em><\/strong>\u2013 You might hear this word to describe a pretty girl in Spain, or a blonde or white woman in Colombia. In Venezuela, you might hear it to describe a girl that\u2019s full of herself. If you look in the dictionary, it also means a female monkey!<\/li><li><strong><em>Taco<\/em><\/strong>\u2013 Yes, this has different meanings in different countries! You might have had a delicious <em>taco<\/em>, the Mexican food. Have you ever been in a <em>taco<\/em> in Chile or Colombia? You would have been in a traffic jam.<\/li><li><strong><em>Machete<\/em><\/strong>\u2013 Although you might know this as a tool, like in Chile or Costa Rica, it means something very different elsewhere. In Argentina or Colombia, it\u2019s a cheat sheet for a test. They\u2019re simply words that sound and look the same, but have different meanings. Let\u2019s take a look:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>Vino<\/em><\/strong>\u2013 It could be a delicious adult beverage, <em>wine<\/em>, or it could be the past tense verb <em>came<\/em>. To say someone came over for wine, you would say <em>Vino para vino.<\/em><\/li><li><strong><em>Traje<\/em><\/strong>\u2013 This word means <em>suit <\/em>as a noun, or <em>I brought <\/em>as a verb. <em>Traje mi traje<\/em> means <em>I brought my suit<\/em>.<\/li><li><strong><em>Cura<\/em><\/strong>\u2013 Meaning both <em>priest<\/em> and <em>cure<\/em>, you definitely want to use context clues if someone is asking for a <em>cura<\/em>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully you learned something new with these words with multiple meanings.
