Now that the holidays are over and you\u2019re seeing your friends and coworkers, you\u2019re probably talking about what you did. We want to give you vocabulary to talk about <em>la Nochebuena<\/em>, or Christmas Eve, and <em>la Navidad<\/em>, or Christmas Day. These words will help you share how you spent your time off. In addition, you can ask what someone else did, or even better understand holiday videos you see online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La Nochebuena and La Navidad common traditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First, you\u2019ll notice that the Spanish-speaking world likely has different holiday traditions than you do. Every country and region has different foods and customs. This affects what different cultures do for dun during the holidays, and what foods they make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That being said, there aren\u2019t too many common traditions that all Spanish-speaking countries celebrate because of how different every country\u2019s culture is. If you\u2019re talking about an action that has a set start and end point, or happened just once, you\u2019re going to want to use the preterite tense. However, if you\u2019re talking about things you used to do when you were younger, you\u2019ll want to use the imperfect tense. If you want to talk about what you do habitually, you\u2019ll use the present tense. It\u2019s totally fine if you need a little refresher on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spanishdict.com\/guide\/preterite-vs-imperfect-in-spanish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">preterite vs. imperfect<\/a> or the present tense!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, here are some foods you might want to talk about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Las galletas<\/strong>\u2013 <em>cookies<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>El pollo<\/strong>\u2013 <em>chicken<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>El arroz<\/strong>\u2013 <em>rice<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>El pescado<\/strong>\u2013 <em>fish<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>La rosca de reyes<\/strong>\u2013 <em>a cake that looks like a crown, eaten on 3 Kings Day (Jan 6)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>El pan<\/strong>\u2013 <em>bread <\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>El jam\u00f3n<\/strong>\u2013 <em>ham<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, here is some vocabulary around different activities that you or your friend might have participated in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>El nacimiento<\/strong>\u2013 <em>nativity scene (it literally means \u201cbirth\u201d, but for Christmas, it refers to the birth of Jesus)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Miso de Gallo<\/strong>\u2013 <em>Midnight mass<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Los reyes magos<\/strong>\u2013 <em>The 3 Kings\/ The 3 Wise Men<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Amigo secreto<\/strong>\u2013 <em>Secret friend gift exchange (often called \u201cSecret Santa\u201d)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Los regalos<\/strong>\u2013 <em>presents<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>La nieve<\/strong>\u2013 <em>snow<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope these words help you communicate and share your favorite holiday traditions!<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Christmas has come and gone, but that doesn\u2019t mean we\u2019re done talking about it!
