A stressed syllable is louder, and there\u2019s a difference in pitch. <em>Can\u2019t we all relate.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Knowing which is the stressed syllable in a word is very useful. It might have a say in whether you pronounce dad (<em>pap\u00e1<\/em>) or potato (<em>papa<\/em>). Unlike in English, in Spanish we can ALWAYS tell which is the stressed syllables. How? Boring grammar rules.<\/p>\n<p>They can be quite confusing even for native Spanish-speakers, so please be kind to yourself when (or <em>if<\/em>) learning this.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Is There a Trick to It?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u0421\u0430\u0439\u0442 <strong>golden rule<\/strong> that works 100 percent of the time: if a Spanish word has a graphic accent ( \u00b4 ), that\u2019s where the stress is.<\/p>\n<p>Caf<strong>\u00e9<\/strong> (kah-<strong>FEH<\/strong>): <em>coffee<\/em><br>\n<strong>\u00c1r<\/strong>bol (<strong>AHR<\/strong>-bohl): <em>tree<\/em><br>\n<strong>Br\u00f3<\/strong>coli (<strong>BROH<\/strong>-koh-lee): <em>broccoli<\/em><br>\n<strong>Tr\u00e1<\/strong>gicamente (<strong>TRAH<\/strong>-hee-kah-mehn-teh): <em>tragically<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What Happens When There Is No Graphic Accent?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>If a word ends in <strong>any consonant except n or s<\/strong>, then the last syllable should be emphasised when speaking aloud.<br>\nFi<strong>nal<\/strong> (fee-<strong>NAHL<\/strong>): <em>end<\/em><br>\nHa<strong>blar<\/strong> (ah-<strong>BLAHR<\/strong>): <em>talk<br>\n<\/em>Amis<strong>tad<\/strong> (ah-mee-<strong>STAHD<\/strong>):<em> friendship<br>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li>If a words end in <strong>n, s or vowel<\/strong>, then stress the second-to-last syllable.<br>\nI<strong>ma<\/strong>gen (ee-<strong>MAH<\/strong>-hen): <em>image<\/em><br>\n<strong>An<\/strong>tes (<strong>AHN<\/strong>-tehs): <em>before<\/em><br>\n<strong>Co<\/strong>sa (<strong>KOH<\/strong>-sah): <em>thing<br>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Really, don\u2019t stress<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As we have mentioned, this is a complex concept for native English speakers as it is completely new territory. Take it easy. If you\u2019re not ready to learn this by heart, no judgement here. Little by little it\u2019ll come naturally to you. And hey, if you mispronounce something here or there, who cares?
