Talk About Hopes and Dreams With These Verbs

When learning a new language, you usually start off learning chunk phrases, then things you do habitually. After that, you’ll want to talk about the past or the future. When you want to talk about your hopes and dreams, there are a few different grammatical constructions you can use, no matter what level you’re at. You can use the present tense, or even the subjunctive, if you’re more advanced!

Talking about your hopes and dreams is one way you can start to express yourself more in Spanish by talking about things you enjoy. In addition, it’s a way to tell more than just actions you do, but rather what’s on your heart. It’s one of the first steps to bringing emotions into your conversations, which helps you feel more natural while you’re speaking.

Grammatical structure to talk about hopes and dreams

As mentioned earlier, there are a few different grammatical structures that you can use to talk about your hopes and dreams in the future. First, you’re able to talk about what you want in the future with verbs in the present tense. The verbs we’ll be working with can be used with other verbs right next to each other. Remember, you can’t have two conjugated verbs in a row, so the first verb is conjugated in the présent, and the second verb stays in the infinitive.

The second grammatical structure uses the subjunctive. When you use the present subjunctive, the first verb is conjugated in the present tense, then there’s the word “que”, and then the second verb is conjugated in the present subjunctive.

Vocabulary to talk about your wants

Here are some important verbs that will help you talk about what you hope for or want:

  1. Vouloirvouloir
  2. Desearto desire
  3. Esperarto wait/hope for

To use these verbs with the present tense, simply conjugate the new vocab word in the present tense, then use whatever verb after it in the infinitive. For example:

Deseo visitar el museo en la ciudad.

I hope to visit the museum in the city.

This is a great way to express things you want to do. It’s the simplest way to express things you want, as long as what you want is an action.

If you want to say that you want someone or something else to do something, that’s when you’ll need to use the subjunctive. That’s because the word “que” acts as a bridge between the two subjects. The first verb is in the subjunctive, and the second verb needs to be conjugated in the subjunctive. For example:

Yo quiero que mi madre me lleve al museo.

I want my mom to take me to the museum.

Since this expression involves a subject change, you need to use the subjunctive. It’s more advanced, but it will allow you to express more complex desires. Whether you’re a beginner or intermediate, you can start describing things you hope for.
