La diferencia entre traer y llevar ha causado muchos quebraderos de cabeza a los estudiantes de español debido a sus similitudes, y English isn’t exactly the same. Muchos alumnos confunden cuándo utilizar estos dos verbos, and although you’re understood by native speakers, it sounds a little funny.

Al decidir si utilizar traer o llevar, the first thing you need to decide is which direction the subject is moving the object. Although they both can be roughly translated to “to bring” or “to take”, Saber cómo se mueve el objeto determina qué verbo utilizar.

If you’re bringing something from “there” to “here”, use the verb traer. However, if you’re moving the item from “here” to “there”, use the verb llevar.

First, let’s focus on the verb “traer”. The best way to think about this verb is that someone is bringing something to you. For example, you could ask someone, “¿Me puedes traer…?” to ask “Can you bring me…?” La otra persona te lleva el objeto, por lo que utilizarías traer.

Por otra parte, llevar se suele utilizar para quitarle algo al sujeto. This is why the phrase “para llevar"se utiliza para llevar café o comida. También se suele utilizar cuando tienes que llevar a alguien a otro lugar. Por ejemplo, “Necesito llevar a mi hijo a...” is how you would say “I need to take my child to…” porque llevas a tu hijo de aquí para allá.

Conjugaciones

En cuanto a las conjugaciones, llevar is a regular verb, so there isn’t anything extra you really need to remember when conjugating it. However, traer tiene una forma yo irregular- traigo. Esto no sólo afecta al tiempo presente, sino que cambia en subjuntivo¡también!
