¿Qué estás haciendo? Domina el Presente Progresivo

There are different ways that we can describe the grammatical present, and one of those ways is the present progressive. In English, it’s when we use “-ing”. ¿Qué es el presente progresivo?

Simply put, the present progressive is how to describe what someone is doing at the moment of speaking. This is a little different than in English where I could say, “I’m working on a project” but I’m not actually working on it at that exact moment. In Spanish, you would use this tense for what you’re doing ahora mismo. In addition, you could use it for anything someone does habitually. Let’s take a look at some examples:

Estoy escribiendo un artículo. I’m writing an article.

Él siempre está trabajando mucho. He’s always working a lot.

En el primer ejemplo, puedes ver que describe lo que alguien está haciendo ahora mismo, en este preciso momento. En el segundo, puedes ver lo que alguien hace habitualmente.

Formar frases

¿Notas algún patrón en las dos frases anteriores? Para formar el presente progresivo, necesitas dos cosas: una forma de estar en and a participle. Let’s look at the verb estar en primero. Aquí tienes sus 6 formas, por si necesitas un repaso:

• yo estoy
• tú estás
• él / ella / usted está
• nosotros estamos
• vosotros estáis
• ellos / ellas / ustedes están

A continuación, necesitamos un participio presenteque es un verbo que termina en -ando o -yendo. In order to form these verbs, you take off the ending and add –ando para los verbos -ar y -siendo para los verbos -er e -ir. Por ejemplo, el participio presente de hablar es hablando. Comer se convierte en comiendo y vivir se convierte en viviendo.

Now, let’s put them together! Use a form of estar eny luego un participio presente de un verbo. Mira estos ejemplos:

• Estás cocinando en la cocina. You’re cooking in the kitchen.
• Ella está jugando. Está jugando.
• Estamos caminando por el parque. Estamos paseando por el parque.
• Estáis bebiendo café. You’re all drinking coffee.
• Ellos están abriendo las ventanas. Están abriendo las ventanas.
