May is the month of mothers around roughly half the globe. Do you know why this is? Each and every country has one — or several — reasons as to why they pay homage to motherhood in May. In most Spanish-speaking countries, this is mostly due to a strong religious background. So let’s talk Mother’s Day, shall we?

In seguito, durante il Medioevo, la Chiesa cattolica adottò queste tradizioni, consacrando l'intero mese di maggio alla Vergine Maria.

Purtroppo, al giorno d'oggi, la Festa della Mamma è praticamente solo un'altra festa che fa parte di un grande elenco di festività di Hallmark per incrementare le vendite. Persino la stessa Anna Jarvis si è pentita di aver fondato l'evento.

Questo non accade solo negli Stati Uniti o in Spagna, ma anche in molti altri paesi. Quindi, invece di concentrarci su biglietti, fiori e tutto il resto... Quale modo migliore di celebrare la Festa della Mamma se non parlando delle donne coraggiose di tutto il mondo?

Mother’s Day in Bolivia

Il 27 maggio 1812, un gruppo di donne coraggiose divenne la prima donna boliviana a combattere. Il contesto storico? La maggior parte del Sud America in guerra contro la Spagna per la propria indipendenza. Un classico.

Mentre gli uomini erano lontani a combattere una guerra sanguinosa, un gruppo di donne guidate da un'anziana nonnina cieca organizzò la resistenza per difendere le loro case a Cochabamba. Inevitabilmente andarono incontro a una tragica sconfitta, ma la Bolivia non ha dimenticato questo atto eroico.

Mother’s Day now pays homage to these heroic women who helped free Bolivia from the Spanish crown. Today, their legacy is kept alive by all the families in Bolivia who celebrate Mother’s Day. This holiday is serious business over there. Schools prepare weeks in advance to invite mothers and celebrate with them. Kids bake their moms creamy cakes and families gather and congratulate not just one’s own mother, but all mother’s in their circle of family and friends. It’s truly a beautiful, warm day filled with love.

Mother’s Day in Mexico

Officially, Mexicans celebrate Mother’s Day on May 10th. May because it’s Virgin Mary’s month. The 10th because that’s when workers were paid back in the day.

Of course, don’t hesitate to practice your Spanish and show your appreciation to your mom all year round. No need to wait for the actual day. Everyday is Mother’s Day in our book.
