Padroneggiare Gustar e verbi simili

“Me gusta” is one of the very first phrases students learn to say “I like.” However, did you know that it literally translates to “to me, it pleases”? Gustar conjugates a bit differently than other verbs, which is why we’ve dedicated this article to gustar and similar verbs. You’ll master them in no time!

In che modo gustar diverso?

Da quando gustar means “to please” and not necessarily “to like”, the verb gustar doesn’t coniugare come gli altri verbi. Utilizzeresti solo due forme del verbo per parlare di cose che ti piacciono, gusta o gustan, a seconda che quello che ti piace sia un sostantivo singolare o plurale. Ad esempio:

Me gusta la música.

Me gustan las manzanas.

The first sentence literally translates to “to me it pleases the music”, and the second literally translates to “to me it pleases the apples.” Since the music and the apples are doing the pleasing, the verb gustar coniugati di conseguenza.

So I don’t use “yo” to say what I like?

“Yo” means “I”, but as we saw earlier, in Spanish, I’m actually saying “a me it pleases.” In English, the person that likes something is the one doing the action, “I like” “he likes” and “they like.” In Spanish, the object is doing the pleasing. We show who is doing the action by using indirect object pronouns, me te le nos os les. Guarda la differenza tra queste due frasi:

Me gusta la casa.

Nos gusta la casa.

Do you see how “gusta” doesn’t change because casa sta compiendo l'azione? Il primo mostra che I come la casa, ma la seconda mostra che noi come la casa.
