For some, winter is the dreaded time of year where the world is colder and you have to scrape ice off of your windshield in the morning. For others, winter is a gorgeous, amazing, exciting time of year to do fun winter activities! There’s a little magic in the winter season, and we’ll show you how to talk about your favorite parts in Spanish.
One of the most fun conversations to have with native Spanish speakers is about snow, la nieve. There are several parts of Spanish-speaking countries that don’t get snow, so it’s a great conversation topic if you’re from a place that gets lots of it!
1. Making a Snowman
- Hacer un muñeco de nieve – To make a snowman
Example: “Los niños les gusta hacer un muñeco de nieve en el jardín.”- Note- in English, we make a snow MAN, but in Spanish, you make a snow DOLL with muñeco.
2. Ice Skating
- Patinar sobre hielo – To ice skate
Example: “Me encanta patinar sobre hielo en el invierno.”
3. Sledding
- Andar en trineo – To go sledding
Example: “Vamos a andar en trineo en la colina.”- Note- you might also hear people say deslizarse instead of andar, which means to slide, or ir meaning to go.
4. Drinking Hot Chocolate
- Beber chocolate caliente – To drink hot chocolate
Example: “Después de jugar en la nieve, bebemos chocolate caliente.”
5. Building an Igloo
- Construir un iglú – To build an igloo
Example: “Los niños construyeron un pequeño iglú en la nieve.”
6. Having a Snowball Fight
- Tener una pelea de bolas de nieve – To have a snowball fight
Example: “La pelea de bolas de nieve fue muy divertida.”
7. Skiing or Snowboarding
- Esquiar – To ski
- Hacer snowboard – To snowboard
Example: “Esquiar en las montañas es una experiencia increíble.”- Note: Typically in Spanish when an action is borrowed from English, you precede it with hacer, which is how we get hacer snowboard. We say it with the summer activity hacer surf as well!
